Homoeopathy
Questions People Often Ask:
Are Homeopathic remedies safe for babies?
An audit of my practice shows that new born babies with a diagnosis from their doctor of constipation, eczema and screaming rather than crying have been relieved of their symptoms to the satisfaction of their parents.
What will treatment be like?
A homeopath will listen to your account of your symptoms and select a remedy which is unique to your case. The remedies are given on sugar pills or powders.
Is homeopathy officially recognised?
In a recent House of Lords report Homeopathy was included in group 1 of the complementary fields with osteopathy and acupuncture and British herbalism.
Is there any research evidence that I could review myself?
There have been many clinical trials and other supportive evidence. I recommend that you begin your research on the Society of Homeopaths web site using the following link:

Our Code of Ethics and Practice stipulates that all research is presented in a fair and balanced way. You will find details on www.homeopathy-soh.org/about-the-society/code-of-ethics.aspx
What about my GP?
Your General Practitioner practice is important to you and your family. It makes sense to keep all your health-care providers informed of the ways you are helping yourself. I would be happy to write to your doctor to keep him or her informed if you wish.
Traditional Acupuncture
Acupuncture has been practised for thousands of years. Often described as a means of pain relief, it can in fact treat a wide range of conditions. Acupuncture treats the whole person and balances our physical, emotional and spiritual energies to restore health.
Modern science has shown that acupuncture stimulates the brain to produce natural pain relieving chemicals, endorphins. These assist the body to heal itself and give pain relief. The traditional view is that Qi (energy) flows round the body in channels. If the Qi is flowing freely the body is in a healthy state. If there is a problem, energy stagnates. The stimulation of appropriate acupuncture points frees this stagnation.
Pilates
The Pilates method of body conditioning is a unique system of stretching and strengthening exercises developed over one hundred years ago by Joseph H Pilates. It strengthens and tones muscles, improves posture, provides flexibility & balance, unites body & mind and creates a more streamlined shape. Matwork is the original system of movement Joseph Pilates created. The philosophy focuses on training the mind and body. The goal of the matwork sequence at any level is to create a natural flow of movement and then to gradually increase the dynamic or energy with which you peform the movement without sacrificing the control. Matwork clases are performed normally lying on a mat sometimes using small pieces of equipment.
Occupational Therapy
Are you finding it increasingly difficult to do everyday tasks such as opening jars, peeling potatoes or pruning the roses!
You may be one of the 8.5 million people in the UK who suffer with osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis affecting the hands, particularly the thumbs, can be painful but there are ways to help ease the pain.
At Bow House we now have an Occupational Therapist as a member of our team.
Occupational Therapists are trained health professionals who help people of all ages overcome physical, social and psychological problems arising from illness or disability.
Our OT can provide advice on joint protection labour saving techniques, exercise and splinting to help ease the discomfort caused by arthritis. Splints can help to rest and support painful, swollen joints, for example, a wrist or thumb splint may improve grip if these joints are painful or unstable.
The OT can tailor make a thermoplastic splint to offer this support.
Counselling
There are many reasons why people seek counselling. It can be useful and very effective at times to help with distress, low self-esteem, anxiety, bereavement, emotional/behavioural issues, relationships etc.
Counselling is based on a simple philosophy which assumes that every human being has a basic core which is valuable, and that they have a potential for growth, change and personal development. This environment allows the person to notice their needs and wishes and to begin to consider what they would like to change in order to achieve their goal.
My role in this is to offer the opportunity to share your issues with someone skilled at listening, to help you develop a deeper understanding about yourself and others. To provide you with a comfortable, private and supportive, and non-judgemental environment as you deal and work through difficult times and situations, to then support your work through these to ultimately overcome hurt, confusion, anger or grief.
Reflexology
Reflexology is a popular and relaxing holistic treatment based on the principle that reflex points on the soles, tops, and sides of the feet are connected to corresponding areas throughout the body.
In this way, the feet can be seen as a 'map' of the body.
Reflexologists work on the reflexes with their thumbs and fingers using specialised massage techniques, said to help correct imbalances throughout the body, and help release blocked energy.
Bowen Technique
The Bowen Technique is a gentle, subtle and hands-on treatment. It originates from Australia by a man called Thomas Bowen who developed his own "technique" and had a thriving practice until he died in the 1980's. This technique is now well known and taught throughout the world.
Suitable for both adults and children including newborn babies, the elderly and infirm.
Nutritional Therapy
Nutritional Therapy is the application of nutrition science in the promotion of optimum health and wellbeing. This approach allows the practitioner to work with people by seeking to support the body's own processes and natural resources, thereby working to optimize function. All systems in the body work synergistically to maintain overall balance and health, with each individual having their own unique requirements to sustain this balance. In recognition of this, nutritional therapy focuses on an holistic whole body-mind approach tailored to each individual and their needs, leading to a personalised nutrition plan rather than following a "one size fits all" method.
